BULLHEAD CITY — It was part spring cleaning, part antique electronics exhibit Saturday as residents dropped off unwanted gadgets at the Bullhead City Public Works yard.

A computer hardware recycling event, sponsored by the Mohave Community College Computer Club (MC4) and the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality, brought out the expected old CRT monitors, dead batteries and now-obsolete computers.

Then there were curiosities such as air conditioning units and old eight-track tape players.

“Somebody brought in a Betamax,” said Doug Hale, an MC4 adviser.

Matt Butcher, a computer information systems faculty member and MC4 adviser, said Westech will take most of the electronics off to Phoenix where they’ll be processed and re-usable materials put back into the supply chain.

Butcher said some of the items collected will be used by students in repair and networking classes.

“The main goal is to just keep it out of the landfills,” he said.

Butcher said he expected the six-hour event to rid the area’s garages and storage rooms of “a couple of truckloads” of unwanted electronics.

Randy Brusso of Mohave Shred was on hand to destroy documents for individuals and businesses and to showcase his business. He said that 20 to 30 people had gotten items shredded in about four hours.

Butcher said the event served as a good relationship-building activity, bonding the community and the volunteers, who included 15 to 20 students.

“Plus it lets them see some of the older stuff,” he said.
